Is the child/young adult having an emergency?

FIRST — if you are a mentor, or a staff member outside of normal business hours, and you are unable or uncomfortable responding, THAT IS OKAY. You don’t have an obligation to.

If you do choose to respond, follow these steps:
(1) If you have their parent’s contact info, call the parent.

(2) Ask the child/young adult where they are.
-If they are suicidal, give them the number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 800-273-8255 (800-273-TALK)-

(3) Call 911 and explain the child/young adult’s situation and their location.

(4) Tell the child/young adult the following:
“Thank you for sharing. I called the police because I care about you, and they should be arriving soon.”

(5) When you are able, call someone at Connecting Champions:

-if they aren’t able to pick up, they will get back to you as soon as they sees your message-
