“Dream Big!” These two words, scribbled on the inside cover of an old media guide, can sum up Kathryn’s mentorship with MC.
At 22 years old preparing for life after college, Kathryn dreams of working in sports communication. With a passion for soccer and love of women’s sports, introducing her to MC, the senior content manager for the United States women’s national soccer team, was a perfect fit.
“Connecting Champions did such a good job in finding MC for me,” said Kathryn. “In my ideal world, I wanted someone who managed a professional women’s soccer team, and they got my favorite thing. It’s so amazing!”
During their calls, MC helped prepare Kathryn for a career of her dreams. MC critiqued her resume, checked out her portfolio, and helped draft some cover letters. Learning from someone in her dream role, Kathryn relished every conversation with her mentor.
“She has the exact job I would love,” Kathryn explained. “I really like storytelling and connecting with people. It’s a fun task to do in sports, specifically soccer. This career is the perfect mix.”
As Kathryn was finishing treatment, MC had a surprise up her sleeve: a custom US women’s national team jersey, complete with Kathryn’s last name and the number of her favorite player.
“[Receiving the jersey] was amazing!,” said Kathryn. “When I finished chemo, I was not expecting anything like that. When she said she was sending something, I thought maybe a card or something, but then she sent me a whole personalized jersey! It was very thoughtful.”
At the end of their mentorship, Kathryn and MC were both asked what their favorite meeting together was, and they both expressed their fondness for the first time they met. “We both felt like it was such a good match,” Kathryn said.
As Kathryn dreams big and forges a career for herself, she can always look in her closet at that #8 Wickersham jersey, a reminder of MC’s mentoring as well as all of the possibilities that lie ahead.
